Relaxing breathing is a deeply calming technique designed to slow the heart rate, quiet the mind, and prepare the body for rest. Often recommended for those experiencing stress, trouble sleeping, or mental tension, this method encourages a longer breathing cycle that naturally promotes relaxation.

Relaxing breathing is commonly known as the 4-7-8 breathing technique, originally popularized by Dr. Andrew Weil and rooted in traditional pranayama practices. By extending both the breath hold and the exhale, this technique helps regulate the nervous system and signals to your body that it is safe to unwind.
Sometimes referred to as “tranquil breathing” or “sleep breathing,” this pattern can be especially helpful before bedtime, during moments of anxiety, or anytime you need to reset your nervous system. Many people notice a sense of calm after just a few rounds.
The extended hold allows oxygen to circulate throughout the body, while the long exhale encourages physical release and relaxation. Although the counts may feel slightly long at first, your body will adapt with practice.
Follow these steps to practice relaxing breathing:
Sit comfortably or lie down in a position that allows your body to fully relax. If it helps, gently close your eyes.
Breathe in quietly through your nose for 4 seconds, keeping the breath smooth and controlled rather than deep or forced.
Hold your breath for 7 seconds. Try to remain relaxed — avoid tightening your shoulders or jaw.
Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds, releasing the air steadily and completely. Imagine tension leaving your body as you breathe out.
Begin the next inhale immediately, maintaining a calm and consistent rhythm.
Repeat this cycle for three to four rounds when starting out. Because this technique is powerful, it’s normal to feel slightly lightheaded at first — this is simply your body adjusting to deeper, more intentional breathing. With regular practice, relaxing breathing can become a reliable tool to help you decompress, fall asleep faster, and restore a sense of balance whenever life feels overwhelming.
